We start today’s session with quite possibly the most stunning big brother I’ve ever had in a newborn studio portrait session. This session was one of a handful I’ve done in my new studio space. What a joy it is to have clients in this beautiful, brand new, purpose-built space. It was designed with client comfort in mind. I can’t tell you what a relief it is for my clients to show up somewhere with, in this case, a 17 month old toddler and not have to worry about them knocking something over or eating/touching something they shouldn’t.
I call today’s type of session “relaxed” because there is a lot less handling of the baby than typical studio sessions. The focus is on simple, beautiful images that focus on each baby’s unique features without putting them in specific poses or props. I’m happy to do them, but some clients like the more stripped down feel of this type of session. Baby stays in a diaper the entire time. You don’t have to worry about them pooping on the blanket!
Relaxed, natural light newborn sessions in the studio mean you don’t always have a full-on, face-to-the-camera baby shot. Maybe the side of baby’s face, or even the back of their head. The focus here is more on the connection with the parents and the joy on everyone’s faces to have this new human. Big brother got to toddle in and out of the picture as he pleased, which is mostly what you can ask of a kiddo who isn’t even close to turning 2. A few strategically places snacks help too.
