Many parents come to me knowing that they want portraits of their baby in the newborn stage. However, many don’t quite know whether they want the session to be in the studio or at their home. I often go through the pros and cons of each – head to this page where I break it down. One thing I do say is a session in the home works best when your home has neutral colored walls and lots of natural light.
Baby L’s parents, as the kids say these days, understood the assignment. Their beautiful home overlooking the Tappan Zee bridge had nothing but abundant natural light and the most beautiful gray walls (weird to say that but alas). My client parents were chill, relaxed and lovely. That is something that I think L. could sense because she slept like a champ. I don’t love belaboring this point, as I worry it makes parents of more alert babies anxious about their sessions, but it’s nice to occasionally get an easy baby to help you feel like you’re a pro.
While I’ve been doing this for over 5 years, you’d think I wouldn’t make rookie mistakes. Alas – I did not bring an extra shirt with me like I normally do. Guess what Miss L did? She had a nice wee while I was wrapping her! Her kind parents loaned me a shirt, which is comical because I had to wear her dad’s stuff given how tiny mama is. It will hopefully make for a funny story her parents can tell for years to come and embarrass her when she’s a teen!
