New parents know, logically, that newborns won’t stay that little for long. Indeed, the newborn stage is the shortest. Babies stay curly, sleepy and squishy for a matter of weeks, not months. That said, there is also nothing like another short phase of baby life: sitting. I promise, one of the best times is that period when your child is sitting up on their own, but not yet crawling. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be anxious for your first baby to hit their milestones. I’m also here to tell you that it’s ok. It is normal for first time parents who have no frame of reference to feel anxiety about their baby accomplishing things when they are “supposed” to. The parental instinct to make sure your baby is healthy is very strong.
That said, once babies are crawling, then walking, you’ll realize how many formerly innocuous things in your home are suddenly danger zones. The 6 month(-ish) sitter is in the glorious time when you can plop them down and do things like brush your teeth or make dinner. All of this without worrying they’ll discover how interesting your light sockets are.
While I call these sitter sessions, sometimes baby isn’t fully sitting on their own just yet. That’s totally fine! I have props to put them in to help, and usually ask a parent to serve as spotter for babies who can sit for short periods of time before flopping over. We do lots of tummy time, playing with toes, and of course cuddles with parents as well.
