During today’s session, I knew this gal’s mama would be happy with my work since she met with me for our consultation while she was still expecting. For her dad, I was a brand new face as we met on session day. I also knew, though, that he was also happy with my work once he commented how painless the session felt. Sometimes families think that newborn portrait sessions have to be long, tedious things they can’t wait to escape. My goal is the exact opposite. Accordingly, I provide clothing, snacks, drinks and a comfy place to relax for tired new parents. I’ll hold the baby for a while, likely insist on feeding them and give them a burp. It’s all in service of giving you a much needed break.
Mama came in with a dress on she thought she might wear, but ended up with something from my closet that she liked better. Part of the reason I provide dresses is that the postpartum season of life often means that your normal clothes just don’t fit right. Enter the client closet! I also have shirts for male partners but this father showed up perfectly camera ready. Sweet baby P remained ready for her close-up the whole session. I was honestly sad to send them home once we took all the pictures. It is families like these that make this feel less like a job and more like a joy.
