I know that I say that all of my shoots are special and I really, really mean it about this one. Baby C. is my nephew! I already have one niece, but he’s my first nephew. I practically invited myself over to my brother’s house to shoot him days after they brought him home from the hospital. I have to do a newborn portrait session of him right? Who else who has a newborn would let me snuggle their baby so soon after its arrival? C. was 7 days old when I shot him and soooo sleepy. I haven’t had a newborn this sleepy since my first newborn session spoiled me for life and made me think I was some kind of baby whisperer/savant. I got my swagger back with this baby boy! His mom was extremely chill about me posing him, while his dad (my brother) was unsurprisingly a stage dad, asking for certain poses and props with a manner that only brothers get away with (bossy). This is a classic posed newborn portrait session that I do, but was unusual in the amount of poses I was able to achieve. Baby boy was sleepy enough to keep going without the normal stop and go you have with newborns: needing a feed, then a change, then some rocking, etc. We just powered through and tired him out! I love doing sessions for family since I can take my time without worrying that the mom get tired. My sister in law can just relax on the couch and eat my food as I work. This is something that a client would find weird if I offered. They often let me try little fun extras like new wrapping techniques that I might not practice on a client who I’ve just met. Now I just need to convince the rest of my family to keep having babies! I’m looking forward to capturing future moments of this little guy’s life as he grows.
