It is not lost on me how lucky I am to have this job. Nothing reminds me of this more than when I shoot families as they add new babies. Today’s family is no different. I photographed big sister’s cake smash, middle sister’s newborn session and now their littlest sister as a newborn in her home. Her parents had moved homes since I last saw them, settling in a beautiful home in Scarsdale that they wanted to have the session in. I did my best to make it easy on them, bringing swaddles and headbands for baby sister. Shooting in home newborns means you don’t have to travel anywhere. Another bonus is I bring what you need for a beautiful, family-focused session. I also like to bring a little prize for her siblings, to reward them for sitting still for a few pictures. It can be hard for kiddos under 7 to sit still!
I try to prioritize sibling portraits since I know as a mama myself that these are the most precious. There is simply nothing like that sibling relationship. Your sibling is the person who will, ideally, know you the longest in life. Spouses come in your 20s or 30s (often) and parents won’t walk through your whole life with you, but siblings are there the longest. It is a sacred bond, even if you aren’t particularly close to them in adulthood.
After the sibling portraits, we move on to family portraits so that we can commit this newly formed unit to memory. Mama is usually the memory keeper so it’s a personal priority to get one picture of her with her babies. A cherished photo of mine is of myself with my three boys. It’s particularly important when you are the photographer and already have a million pictures of your husband with these kiddos.
Contact me today – the best time to book your newborn photographer, whether you want an in home newborn session or an in studio session, is when you are still expecting. These little babies change really fast! It is a small window to capture how little they are in those first months. I also do posed newborns with props and fun swaddles – check out a few of those sessions here.
